The Combined Operations at Dieppe

On the night of August 18th the pilots of many R.C.A.F. and R.A.F. squadrons were briefed for the great combined operation which was set to take place on the following morning. The Battle of Dieppe was about to begin. “Here it is at last,” was the common thought of air and ground crews throughout the force.

The action at Dieppe marked the largest-scale operation to date by co-ordinated forces of the Navy, Army and Air Force against the defences of enemy-occupied Europe. It provided the first test of the importance of air power to such an undertaking and of the extent to which aircraft might be utilized in any projected cross Channel assault upon the Continent.

Briefly, the objectives of the operation were two:

(a) To test German defences;

(b) To lure as many German aircraft as possible into the air.

The tasks allotted the air units were:

(a) To provide air cover for the Navy and Army. This was supplied largely by fighter aircraft;

(b) To attack coast defence batteries in the area and fortified headlands on the flanks-carried out by medium and fighter bombers;

(c) To lay a smoke screen to cover the advancing and
retiring forces-intruder aircraft;

(d) To carry out tactical reconnaissance within the area and in the immediate neighbourhood of the point of assault army

(e) To detect unusual enemy ship movements preceding the attack-Coastal Command aircraft.

The operation may be divided roughly into five phases:

(a) The outward passage and landings;

(b) The assault on the shore objectives;

(c) The withdrawal to the beaches;

(d) The embarkation;

(e) The return passage.

The work of the different types of aircraft in each of the five phases is discussed in the appropriate chapters. At dawn on the 19th, the pilots were standing at readiness and shortly afterwards the first fighter patrols were airborne to cover the landings. From that moment onwards a continuous cover was maintained by squadrons working in relays until the ground forces had withdrawn and were safely across the Channel again. The scale of Fighter Command’s operations that day far surpassed anything previously attempted-greater even than the climax of the Battle of Britain.

During the first phase of the operation, which took place from 0455 to 0550 hours, the Air Force laid smoke screens, attacked enemy defences and positions on the coast and gave air cover to the troops. There was relatively little enemy activity in the air and Canadian squadrons had no part in this preliminary phase.

During the second phase, from 0550 to 0730, enemy fighter opposition in the air increased and the Canadians fought sharp but indecisive actions with FW. 190s.

In the third phase, when progress on the right of the landing was seen to be satisfactory but Canadian troops and tanks in the centre were being held up, enemy air activity increased materially, and reached a peak about ten o’clock with the appearance of Nazi bombers who concentrated their attacks on our naval vessels and landing craft lying off shore. The fighting was heavy during this period and the enemy lost many bombers. One R.C.A.F. squadron destroyed two bombers but lost three of their own pilots; another destroyed one and lost two in a combat in which they were outnumbered three to one.

At ten minutes to eleven, re-embarkation was scheduled to commence. From then until the convoy had cleared the French coast and was well across the Channel on the return, our fighters continued to cover the ships against bomber and fighterbomber attacks, while other formations of Hurricanes, Blenheims and Bostons bombed enemy gun positions and laid another protective smoke screen. To hamper enemy operations during this critical period a heavy diversionary raid was made on the Luftwaffe aerodrome at Abbeville-Drucat by a force of 24 American Flying Fortresses escorted by a wing of Spitfires which included R.C.A.F. squadrons. The Fortresses once again did extremely accurate bombing despite heavy flak which burst close to their aircraft; direct hits by bombs were observed on dispersal areas, runways and flak positions. Aerodrome facilities received a severe hammering and the field was put out of action for several hours.

After completing their escort duties during this attack, one of the R.C.A.F. squadrons turned off towards Dieppe to join in the action there, during which S/L K. L. B. Hodson and his pilots intercepted four Dos. on their way to bomb our ships and drove them off damaged. Morrison destroyed a FW. 190 but his own aircraft was damaged by pieces flying from the enemy plane and he was forced to bale out into the Channel, from which he was later picked up by a rescue boat. During the return of the combined forces S/L Lloyd V. Chadburn’s formation was very heavily engaged and fought a brilliant action without loss. As the Spitfires were approaching the convoy to commence their patrol a formation of from twelve to fifteen FWs. dived on them from the rear. Chadburn brought his squadron round in a tight turn on the tails of the attackers and reversed the tables so effectively that three of the FWs. were destroyed. Hurriedly reforming, Chadburn and his pilots resumed their protective patrol and saw seven Ju.88s approaching the convoy. Flying in to attack the Nazis head-on, the Canadians succeeded in driving off the whole formation, damaging at least six. Again the Spitfires reformed as a large group of FWs. appeared several thousand feet above but did not attack. But Chadburn’s pilots were not finished yet, as one section engaged a formation of Me. 110s and drove them off, after which, their job finished, the Spit pilots flew, home for their first hot meal of the day.

Another squadron, on duty high above the convoy, also saw action during the day and damaged several fighters but lost two of their own. Later patrols saw less action as the convoy approached the English coast, but Ford and P/O H.J. Murphy each destroyed an FW., while Newton chased off a Dornier 217 and forced it to jettison its bombs.

Total enemy casualties that day were assessed at 93 aircraft destroyed, with twice that number of probables or damaged. Allied losses were set at 98 aircraft, the pilots of 30 of which were rescued. But mere figures do not give a correct picture of the destruction caused by our pilots. The losses of the G.A.F., considered in relation to the size of the forces available and involved, were several times higher than those of the R.A.F. Fighter aircraft destroyed disregarding those claimed as “probably destroyed” or “damaged”-constituted almost a fifth of the estimated fighter strength of the Luftwaffe in the western part of Europe. William Emperian called to the dying boy found him to be his youngest son. He was so grateful to Thomas for a chance for a few words with his son that when he heard that Thomas had lost his parents in an air raid, he adopted him.

The Essex Scottish landed on the stony beach in front of Dieppe at 5:15 in the morning of August 19, 1942, seventy years ago. The infantrymen ran into fire from the buildings to their front and from the east and west headlands that dominated the beach, and by 5:45, their one officer who made it back to England said later, up to 40 percent of the men were killed or wounded. No more than a dozen had made it off the beach and into the town; only 52 returned across the Channel. For the Essex Scottish, for every regiment involved, Dieppe was a bloody disaster.

Why Dieppe? In the summer of 1942, the Allies were losing the war in Europe and Asia and barely hanging on in North Africa. From Moscow, the Russians demanded help to take some pressure off their long front; in Washington, the Americans called for a “Second Front” in France long before the Allies had the capacity to launch one. A big raid could ease Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s dealings with his allies, and if it could demonstrate the feasibility of seizing a defended port, it might shape the planning for the Second Front when the time was right. Just across the English Channel in France, Dieppe seemed the logical place to the planners in Combined Operations Headquarters.

Why the Canadians? The army had been in Britain in force since December 1939, their numbers increasing each year, but the Canadians had yet to see action. With the Americans now in the war, with pressure building at home for “their boys” to beat the Hun, with the troops chafing at endless training, the Canadian generals pushed hard to take on the Dieppe operation. The British eventually agreed, and the task went to the 2^nd Canadian Division whose commander, Major-General Hamilton Roberts, was believed to be the ablest of Canadian division commanders. The large raid, to involve some 5000 Canadians as well as a thousand British commandos, was initially slated for early July, but bad weather forced a cancellation. Against conventional wisdom, it was re-scheduled for the next month, the assumption being that the enemy simply would not believe that the same troops would be used to attack the same once-cancelled target. But the August raid, called Operation Jubilee, had less air and naval support, though the objective—to take and hold Dieppe long enough to allow the destruction of the harbour facilities—remained almost unchanged. The commandos were to land to the far east and west and destroy gun batteries. The Canadians were given three beaches: Puys to the east of Dieppe, Pourville to the west, and the main beach where the Essex Scottish, the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (RHLI), and the tanks of the Calgary Regiment were to land.

From the outset, nothing went right. A German coastal convoy bumped into the invasion force, alerting the defences. The attack at Puys touched down 35 minutes late, leaving the Canadians visible to the enemy on the cliff overlooking the beach. Only carnage resulted. At Pourville, the navy landed the men at the wrong place but the attack achieved surprise because of the darkness. Some objectives were taken, much heroism was shown as some infantry moved 2000 yards inland, but the landing ultimately went nowhere, and the Canadians withdrew under heavy fire.

In front of the town, the tanks had trouble moving on the stony beach and only a few managed to get on to the esplanade. A few of the RHLI managed to get through the barbed wire and into the town, clearing the heavily defended casino and then winkling the enemy out of defended houses. Unfortunately, a garbled message from the beach to General Roberts led him to send in Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal, his floating reserve. They were almost wiped out, their badly wounded commanding officer dragged onto a landing craft. He was the only CO to make it back to England.

The Dieppe Raid had been a debacle. 907 officers and men died on the beaches, 586 suffered wounds, and 1946 became prisoners of war. Only 2200 returned to Britain, many of them never having gone ashore. The Royal and Royal Canadian Air Forces, providing air cover, suffered heavy losses as did the Royal Navy.

One company of the RHLI had been raised from workers at the E.D. Smith jam company in Winona, Ont. It lost every man, a devastating blow to a tiny town. The padre of the Essex Scottish, left behind at camp, had walked through the barracks, weeping at the empty beds. And in Canada when the casualty lists were printed, the shock was intense. The 2 Canadian Division, shattered, took a long time to rebuild and regain its confidence. General Roberts, largely blameless, became the scapegoat.

Prepared in advance in case of failure, the media line from British and Canadian officers was clear: great courage had been demonstrated and many lessons had been learned. In fact, only the first part was correct. The lessons should have been obvious. There were cliffs overlooking the beaches at Puys and Dieppe. Where else would the Germans have placed their weapons? Moreover, the shingle beach, a beach that British tourists had sunned themselves on for decades, was not readily traversed by tracked vehicles. How did no one know this? The poor planning, the utter military incompetence of those in command at Combined Operations HQ, had guaranteed that Dieppe would be a shambles. The soldiers, as is always the case, paid the price. Fortunately, the D-Day invasion two years later would be better planned.

August 21, 2012: I watched the O’Keefe documentary on Dieppe last night. I believe O’Keefe has found some important documentation that was hitherto largely unknown and for this he deserves great praise. But he ignores a few critical points. The Enigma machines in Allied hands came off U-boats or ships captured by the RN. The Germans did not know that the coding devices (and documents) were in British hands; thus they continued to use them. But if a 4-rotor Enigma and code settings had been snatched at Dieppe, the Germans would have instantly been aware of the loss and instituted changes—newer machines, new settings, bogus messaging, etc. Where then is the huge war-winning advantage to the Allies?

O’Keefe has added to our understanding of the raid, but his material—in my view, based only on a 90-min TV programme rather than a book where one can assess the evidence presented—does not fundamentally change the story.

"You read the history of different battles in different wars and there's never been an attack of this kind from the sea, or from land, where there's never been a softening-up process. If they wanted to determine if they could take a fortified seaport, why didn't they do it properly?

The umbrella of planes provided troops taking part in the raid on Dieppe was the "finest thing I ever saw."

Just before Dieppe his battery was called to a channel port to take part in defense of the barges being massed for the raid.

"The air was thick with Spitfires and other Allied aircraft. Jerry was afraid to come over. A few Nazi planes that did show up were shot down by the navy. We didn't have an alert all the time we were there. Coming back, the barges had the same thick cutain of aircraft above them. They were well protected."

Leaman Patterson - Calgary Tanks -“A lot of good men went to meet their Maker that day.”

(By Quentin Dodd - The Tyee 2005) For Patterson, his first engagement with the enemy, on the shell-torn beach of the French seaside resort of Dieppe, was his last. The tank he drove was among the last to arrive and the battle was already well under way when finally the ramp went down on the Tank Landing Craft (TLC) he was aboard. Patterson’s taste of warfare lasted only a scant four or five hours after that. He then spent close to three years as a prisoner of war.

Many of the men who fought and died or were wounded and captured that summer’s morning had impulsively joined Patterson’s regiment as it was sent to training at Camp Borden in Ontario. They had heard that they, already enlisted in other forces, were probably going to be left behind while the Calgary Tanks went abroad to the fighting. So they leapt at the chance to join the Calgary Tanks.

And then, almost to a man, they were slaughtered in the Dieppe raid.

The raid was a combined-forces operation with almost all Canadian ground-troops. The Calgary Tanks and their machines were expected to stay behind to try to give cover and covering fire to the retreating infantry as the British Navy tried desperately to take them off the beach, back to the safety of England.

The evacuation too brought more than its share of danger and death. On the steeply sloping beach, there was some cover from the deadly fire of the Germans in the town. When the retreating troops moved out to get aboard the waiting evacuation vessels, they were seen to come under devastating fire.

“I saw one craft. They were just pulling out and the Germans just dropped a mortar shell right on it and they were likely all killed,” Patterson said.

It was not the first or the last time he saw men killed and wounded that day as the Germans rained fire down on the invading troops from the tall buildings of the once-peaceful casino town and from the gun emplacements on the top of the high, sheer cliffs at each end of the small, deep bay.

“We didn’t really hear very much when the ramp went down on the TLC (Tank Landing Craft). There was some racket of the battle but we didn’t hear much because of the tank engines,” Patterson said, remembering the roar given off by two other tanks on the landing craft with him.

By then it was broad daylight. The attack had been meant to go in before dawn, under cover of darkness.

All three tanks in the TLC Patterson was aboard had been fully sealed in case they landed in five or six feet of water, and they had to blow their sealing off explosively once they reached the beach.

It was immediately after blowing that seal that Patterson saw his first death through the three-inch perspex of his driver’s slot.

“The first casualty I saw was a young engineer I had been chatting to the night before, who was meant to go up and blow up the concrete obstructions the Germans had put there. He tried to crawl up the bank (of the beach) with his explosives. His explosives kit was hit and was blazing. He must have been in agony. I’m glad I couldn’t hear him screaming.”

When it was his Churchill tank’s turn to leave the landing craft, Patterson followed the other two as they made towards the town. The others managed to get out of the sight of the deadly fire into the initial part of the town before the German gunners could get the range. But as Patterson steered after them and crested the bank of the beach, the tank instantly took a direct hit on its exposed front, totally destroying the steering column in his hands.

Patterson estimates his group had been on the beach no more than about five minutes. He was momentarily knocked unconscious by the blast and his co-driver alongside him received a neck wound which was pumping blood until they slapped a field dressing on it.

But the tank, which had been knocked some 30 feet back down the slope by the blast, was still operable. The steering was gone but it could still move backwards and forwards and the turret and its gun were still in good working order. So, directed by an officer on the beach picking targets, the tank, given the name Canny, popped up to fire a two-pound shell at selected targets and then quickly fall back behind the cover of the cobble-stone beach. That continued for some hours, until the tank had to be abandoned and one of the crew tossed in a special explosive to disable it and prevent it from falling into enemy hands.

“I got separated from the rest of the crew after that,” Patterson recalled. “We were all in a shell-hole and when I came out there was nobody around. I later remember being in a shell-hole and they were trying to get me with a mortar. They were getting pretty close too. I think I must have been a bit shell-shocked, because they found me wandering about the beach (after the cease-fire and surrender).

It was after that, Pattterson recalls, that he happened to witness a German officer execute one of his own men. The young private had been looting the Canadian dead and prisoners, taking anything he could. When he took a prisoner’s picture of his wife or family and the Canadian asked for it back, the private ripped it in two.

“The officer might just have come out of officer’s training - he was immaculate,” said Patterson. “He spoke to this private and the guy turned around, and the officer shot him right in the head, right in front of me. I have to admit I didn’t think much about it. He put his gun in his holster and looked a little sick and then just walked off.”

Patterson had been slightly but painfully wounded in the face by the mortar-shelling among the beach’s cobble-stones, and he was put into hospital in Rouen for a few days by his German captors. The Germans soon decided that Patterson was “malingering” as he put it, and he was then sent to catch up with the hundreds of other troops from the raid who were in holding camps waiting to be sent to POW camps. Those camps turned out to be not in Germany, but Poland.

Patterson therefore found himself on one of the infamous Death Marches with other POWs, as the Germans retreated before the Russians in the final stages of the war. For him the march began Robbie Burns’ Day in late January 1945 and lasted through to May, when he was finally liberated.

Patterson said he found life in the two POW camps he was mostly boring, with poor rations and food. He recalls seeing a sergeant escape carrying a small suitcase one day while the prisoners set up a diversion for the guards by staging a wrestling match. The most anxious time was when the prisoners from Dieppe were ordered tied up because some captured Germans had been tied up with short lengths of string - contrary to the Geneva Convention on the treatment of POWs - for taking back to England.

“After some weeks, Hitler ordered that they change that to (wrist) shackles and that went on for months,” said Patterson. “That was an anxious time because we didn’t know what to expect or what they were going to do with us. Eventually there was a prisoner exchange and the [German] prisoners from Canada told how well they had been treated over here, so they took the shackles off. We had to wear them from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and we used to use the key from bully-beef cans to unlock them. I spent a couple or three hours chained to a tree outside once or twice for going without my shackles.”

Patterson said while he remains unclear about the exact purpose of the raid, he thinks the commanders probably knew it was going to be a massacre but went ahead with it anyway, to draw pressure off the besieged Russians at Stalingrad and to make a point to the Russians that the Allies in England were not ready yet to mount a Second Front on the Atlantic coastline of Europe. No other frontal attack was ever made from the ocean on a fortified port during the rest of the war, and the D-Day invasion took place on beaches away from towns.

“I think it was probably done on purpose,” the 84-year-old said without apparent bitterness. “As you know, in warfare, to sacrifice 600 or 700 men to gain a point is peanuts and I believe it was to show the rest of the world we were not ready.”

Patterson said one other thing many of the tank commanders and drivers were not ready for was the cobble stones of the beach on Dieppe, which piled up on the tracks of many of the tanks, were carried round into the drive wheels, and there caused the tracks to snap and break.

Fortunately for him, he said, he and the people in the tanks in the troop aboard his landing craft were from agricultural parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan, used to working with tractors and tracked vehicles on farms. They spotted the danger and warned others not to turn their tank too sharply, to avoid the big stones piling up on the tracks.

His background on a farm in Alberta had served him well, but he still counts himself lucky not to have been among the 907 soldiers killed in the brief battle that day. A total of 119 Allied aircraft were also lost in an air-battle overhead, 13 of them from eight Canadian squadrons.

“A lot of good men went to meet their Maker that day,” he said.

Americans in Canadian Army

Sergt. Everett (Arky) Oglesby of Manila, Arkansas, was a farmer until he joined up with the Essex Scottish Regiment, May 27, 1940 because, "I couldn't see why might was right and I knew we were going to get into the fight anyway."

Oglesby was wounded by scrapnel through the right lung in the Dieppe raid. His wallet and a paybook stopped another piece of scrapnel that might have pierced his heart.

In October 1943, Oglesby returned home as part of the first Allied prisoner exchange of the war with the Germans.

"I just can't visualize it. I still think I'm in Stalag No. 8 Lamsdorf. That barbed wire was like to drive me darned near crazy."

Coming back we sighted 6 Dorniers and I just couldn't hold the boys back. Other Dorniers were shooting at us as we attacked the patrol. We got 6, probably another, and damaged another."

Citation: “During the past 6 months, this officer has led his wing on a large number of sorties. In this period, the wing has destroyed 49 enemy aircraft and probably destroyed and damaged many others. During the combined operations at Dieppe on the 19th August, 1942, the wing completed a large number of sorties; 21 enemy aircraft were destroyed, and many others damaged. Wing Commander Scott-Malden led the wing on 3 of these sorties. The splendid success achieved on this and other occasions is largely attributable to the magnificent leadership displayed by Wing Commander Scott-Maiden. He is a brilliant pilot and a fine tactician, whose thorough knowledge and personal example have proved worthy of the highest praise.”

He completed several sorties during which he constantly flew amongst enemy bomber and fighter patrols. Op 1: Took off from base at 4:30 a.m. detailed to carry out operations against anti-aircraft gun positions and buildings in the town of Dieppe, in conjunction with other aircraft. The aircraft were over the target area at 5:14 a.m. and immediately went into the attack. During the second attack Sgt. Banks' Hurricane was separated from the rest of the squadron, thought to be due to having sustained damage by anti-aircraft fire over the target area and carried out a landing in the sea.

Sgt. Pilot Godfrey Ball, of Monto, Queensland, was among the Australians in the first thrust. and his squadron began operations as dawn was breaking. Hurricane Z2915

"The flak was extremely thick at that stage causing the day's heaviest casualities. Beaches, cliffs and houses were honeycombed with machine gun nests and blockhouses which were able to crossfire to our commandos. Our job was to silence them and this proved tough going.

"Once half a dozen Focke-Wulfs dived at us but the Spitfires - who did a marvelous job that day - drove them off. The air over us simply swarmed with aircraft."

On the first of these, his aircraft was badly damaged by enemy fire but he flew it back to his base and executed a skilful landing. Throughout the operations he set a splendid example. Flight Lieutenant Lister has destroyed a Junkers 88.”

(J/15375) Pilot Officer John Trent Wills, Saint John, N.B., Hurricane HL560 was the first Canadian pilot over Dieppe. No man in the squadron outside of the commanding officer made more trips over Dieppe. His work began in the pre-dawn darkness, and he paused during the day only long enough to snatch a bite and a bit of rest to step from one bullet and flak- riddled Hurricane into another. Willis and his squadron mates strafed ground defences and made low-level attacks against enemy shipping off the coast. He said they flew so low they were within revolver shot of the ground defences. Wills was killed in action, February 22, 1943.

There were ships diving and parachutes going down and rubber dinghies floating around. You could map read your way home by just following the line of dinghies across the channel. Sure there were Germans going down - lots of them - you can't tell a man's nationality by the way he looks in a parachute."

Ron Chatfield (1992 interview IWM): "It (Dieppe) wasn't much of a success I'm afraid. The Germans all knew that it was going to happen long before it did.

"We were all dispatched to Ford aerodrome a couple of days or so before the raid. I went by transport. During our journey there, we got lost on the road. The driver stopped and asked where he was. He didn't ask the way to Ford aerodrome, he asked where it was and the person who we asked never said where it was, they just turned around and said, 'Oh, I know what you want, you want Ford aerodrome. There's a number of you going down that way.'

"So I firmly believe that almost everybody knew what was happening in some way or another. It was incredible.

"Dieppe was our first operation. We were bombing troop movements to enable the Canadians to make an organized retreat from Dieppe. I can't say from the height we were bombing whether we were effective or not. The leader dipped his aircraft and my pilot followed suit. I never had my safety belt on and I came out of my seat and hit the canopy on top. God, it was an experience. The ammunition all came up in the air. It never happened again."

Citation: "Since being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross this officer has completed many sorties over enemy territory. He is a fine leader and a tenacious fighter. In June, 1942, whilst escorting a force of bombers from an attack on Le Havre,his skilful tactics frustrated the efforts of 12 Focke Wulfe 190s to engage the bombers. In the ensuing engagement, 3 of the enemy's aircraft were destroyed without loss. In August, 1942, he led a daring and determined attack on a number of enemy float planes which were destroyed despite the presence of, enemy fighters. The next day, in low-level attacks on certain positions during the combined operations on Dieppe, Squadron Leader Thomas's magnificent work won the admiration of the attacking forces. This officer is an outstanding squadron commander, whose great skill and faultless judgment have contributed materially to the many successes achieved by his squadron."

No. 129 Squadron

0447 hours: Dick Reeves was probably one of the first aircraft into France in advance of the Dieppe Raid. He was on a special mission to attack a lighthouse that was being used as a spotting position for a heavy battery of guns called 'Rommel.' The squadron was to strafe the gun position and Lord Lovat's commandos were to attack it. Flying Officer Harry Jones and Dick Reeves went in to attack the lighthouse and Jones, who was the #1, was shot down before reaching the objective. Dick, who was the #2, carried on and strafed the target. En route back to England, his plane was attacked, heavily damaged, and he was wounded, but he and his aircraft survived after shooting down the enemy plane. That part of the Dieppe Raid worked very well and Dick received a personal letter of thanks from Lord Lovat. When he left 129 Squadron the 'ERKS' mechanics gave him a sterling silver cigarette case engraved with an image of 'The Saint' kicking down the lighthouse, identical to that which they had previously painted on his Spitfire. On the outward flight weather over the channel was very bad with heavy rain and poor visibility; at times, Pilot Officer Harris-St. John was forced down within 30 feet of the sea. When within three miles of the enemy coast visibility became clear and Pilot Officer Harris-St. John found himself heading straight for Dieppe at 100 feet. There was no cloud cover nearer than 12,000 feet, but fully alive to the importance of his mission he decided to fly straight ahead at only 100 feet. Whilst still a mile from the objective, the defences opened fire, but he courageously pressed on and flew right in over the harbour mouth in the face of intense light anti-aircraft and machine gun fire. He took exposures of the harbour and docks flying only just high enough to clear the house tops. His aircraft was hit by a shell which blew a hole twelve inches square in the starboard main plane and splintered the engine cowlings. Pilot Officer Harris-St. John was now inland with the nearest cloud cover some three miles out to sea. Displaying great resource, he dived towards the coast-line, opening fire on the nearest gun emplacement to cause confusion, thus he was able to fly out to sea and reach the safety of the cloud cover. His photographs of the objective were first class and provided Combined Operations with extremely valuable information.”

"Hank Costain first flew a Spitfire in 1942, at the age of 19. He described flying a Spitfire as "absolutely marvellous".

"When you first got into the seat and opened the throttle it felt as if someone had given you a good kick up the bottom and away you went.

"It would do everything you asked of it. Compared to other aircraft it was light on the controls, you could do all the aerobatics and you would come up to speed very quickly.

"If you treated a Spitfire properly, it treated you properly. Treat it roughly or be careless with it and you were in trouble, in that it would do all sorts of things such as ground looping. It also had a very fragile undercarriage and could collapse."

"Everyone that joined the air force wanted to fly a Spitfire."

A Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft Mr Costain describes the Spitfire as "England's saving grace"

During and since his flying days, Mr Costain says he has often been asked if he was frightened during the war years.

"I was terrified, but I was terrified of letting my own friends see that I was frightened. One made one's self very determined that you wouldn't show that.

"If you were attacked when you were flying a Spitfire during the war years, you turned hard into the attacking aircraft and they just couldn't get behind you! It was much more manoeuvrable than the German aircraft.

Norm Howe and his childhood buddy Jack MacLean were both 19 years old when war broke out in 1939.

The duo were inseparable.

They spent time together in their hometown of Toronto, played competitive tennis together and decided to enlist together.

“We were getting a little antsy that we’d be called up to the army, so we decided to join the air force,” Howe said.

In December 1939, they began training for their pilot’s licence.McLean was unable to complete his training after he burst his ear drum during a training exercise.

“He was ruled out as a pilot and became a navigator,” Howe said. “I got my wings.”

Howe was sent overseas in 1941 and flew an impressive 90 combat missions in bombers and fighter planes over France, Holland and Belgium during the Second World War.

In 1944 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his efforts.

In a letter endorsed by his squadron commander, Howe was described as a keen and enthusiastic officer who set an example for the rest of his squadron.

“This officer never misses a chance of taking part,” the commander wrote in the letter. “He has good record of sustained effort. His 32 dive-bombing attacks were particularly worth of notice."

"He took part in the Dieppe Raid when he led his section in low level attacks on gun positions.

"During a dive-bombing attack in France, he was “very badly shot up and in spite of severe damage he brought the aircraft safely home."

One of the planes he flew during the war was the Hawker Typhoon.

“It was a big bird of an aircraft. I never dreamed I’d be flying an aircraft … let alone an aircraft filled with guns and bullets.”

During his missions, Howe said he felt like he was invincible.

“You always thought that you’d make it back … somehow. You thought you were immortal,” he said, adding he always returned to base even on the few occasions his plane suffered major damage.

Howe made it back. His childhood friend MacLean did not.MacLean was on board an aircraft when it crashed into a mountain in North Africa. (Niagara Falls Review)

The formation was met with formidable anti-aircraft fire and Squadron Leader Kennedy's aircraft was repeatedly hit, one engine being put out of action. Flying Officer Casey was wounded in both thighs, whilst his co-gunner was critically injured. In spite of this, Squadron Leader Kennedy, resolutely supported by the skilful navigation of Flying Officer Asker, led his formation over the town at low level and released his smoke bombs with precise accuracy on the target. Meanwhile, Flying Officer Casey, disregarding his injuries, engaged the enemy's defences whenever they came within reach of his guns. Squadron Leader Kennedy eventually flew his damaged aircraft to base and landed safely. "I have a few additional points to add to the 226 Sqn record.

1. You have a reference to Sgt Stanley Moth who was an Observer Navigator on the Raid. He was injured and lost both his legs. He was found in the floating nose cone of a Boston.

He survived his wounds and lived a fruitful life as Headmaster of the Grammar School at Kesteven nr Gt Yarmouth.

My father's second operational sortie was in the final mission of 226, to lay smoke across the beaches in order to screen the withdrawal.

His Log reads

The damaged plane was left at Thruxton and they flew back to Swanton Morley in Boston z2258;

"My father Basil Flemington Newton volunteered RAFVR in 1939, and was eventually sent to train as a Navigator/Bomb Aimer/Observer/Air Gunner at Queenstown in the Eastern Cape.

He was posted to 18 Sqn in May 1942 and on May 15 to 226 Sqn who were training up in Bostons. Thereafter he flew for most of the war with Tom Goodman, both completing 30 Ops and moving to 13 OTU at Finmere training with radiolocation and airbourne radar. "

In May 1945 he was posted to RAF Melsbroek ( Brussels Airport) and flew in 98 Sqn as navigator to Sqn Lr McPhee flying Mitchells and Mosquitos.

He left the service as Flt/Lt in November 1945 and a well deserved rest in a Merchant Bank."

Of further interest, he was, 2 days after the first "Torch" landings in N Africa lent for a month to 35 Squadron US Army Air Corps to fly C53 transports to Casablanca and flew many times, including close operational support in a/c 26585 with Lt Paul as Pilot.

He returned to UK in a Liberator On Dec 9th 1942 and was back on Ops bombing St Malo docks on Dec 23d.

The reason for our movement to Graves End became clear. An action to place troops on the French coast at Dieppe was scheduled for the next day. Fighter squadrons were poised to provide cover and support for the operation, and a strenuous battle could be expected. Needless to say all leave was cancelled. Those detailed to fly, who lacked previous experience of such action, would have a largely sleepless night. A young Englishman occupying a bunk next to mine once awakened me with threshing. He was the only one of the Squadron not to return from a sortie next morning.

"I was not wanted on the early sorties, but the C.O. took me as his number two on an incursion over France in the late afternoon. By then the main battle was over, but the navy would be withdrawing with the remnants of the army which had suffered grievously. Fighters would still be required to provide cover. I was mainly concerned with maintaining station with the other aircraft as we were weaving violently, but at the same time it was a new experience for me to hear the calls of battle through my ear phones. Not seeing any enemy we returned to base.

"Although I was not directly involved in the principal actions of that day, the date of 19 August had continued to be memorable to me. Doubtless even the waiting was traumatic. It must have been one of the most intense and bloodiest mornings of the war. About three thousand Canadian families would have gone into mourning. The Royal Air Force lost 106 aircraft and 113 aircrew from 67 squadrons involved, and the Germans have admitted even heavier losses with 170 aircraft going down.

"Seemingly the raid on Dieppe was a dummy run to test German defences at an Atlantic port in anticipation of a subsequent invasion. A secondary intention may have been political as the destruction of aircraft on the German Western Front would weaken the war effort on the Eastern Front. The balance of power was shifting with the allied forces gaining in strength and starting to take the war to Germany and its occupied territories."

One day in August 1942 came the day for which the army co-operation pilots had waited so long. At last they had an orthodox army co-op. job to do! Their role in the attack on Dieppe was to make low tactical reconnaissances of the roads in the Dieppe area, to watch for enemy troop movements while our forces were making their landing, consolidating their positions and retiring. When August 19th, Dieppe day, arrived, the original R.C.A.F. army cooperation squadron had been reinforced by another similar R.C.A.F. unit and both had a part in the day’s activities. At first light, both squadrons were in readiness and at 0445 the first aircraft took off. From then until the land forces had been withdrawn from the beaches, nine hours later, pilots of the two squadrons, working in pairs, maintained a constant surveillance over the roads in the area. The first sorties covered the districts immediately west and east of the landing points, and as the day advanced they penetrated deeper in both directions until they covered an area extending from Le Tréport, Abbeville and Amiens on the east to Le Havre, Yvetot and Rouen on the west. The dawn patrols had found no movement whatsoever on the roads of the immediate neighbourhood and the later pilots found little anywhere in the district.

On that day, one-half of the army co-operation work was done by R.C.A.F. pilots.

Heavy flak was encountered in many places and the Mustangs suffered a considerable amount of minor damage, but only one of our pilots, P/O Burlingam, was shot down by one of the many FW. 190s which were encountered throughout the day. Another pilot, attacked by FWs. over Dieppe, was forced to ditch his aircraft in the Channel, but was later picked up by a destroyer. His weaver, F/O H. H. Hills, had in the meantime shot down the attacking Focke-Wulf, probably the first time an enemy aircraft had been destroyed in the air by a Mustang.

Another weaver, P/O C. H. Stover, while protecting his partner on a deep reconnaissance, was attacked by a low-flying FW. and took such violent evasive action that he ran into a telephone pole and lost three feet from the tip of his starboard wing. Despite this, Stover got his kite back to base, where he had to make a crash-landing.

"They seemed to be packs of four and I went down so low I didn't notice a cement telephone pole which clipped off half my wing."

Dieppe had given the two R.C.A.F. army co-operation squadrons overseas their first full workout in action. Repeatedly in the past they had co-operated with units of the Canadian Army in training exercises. (RCAF Overseas)

Flight Sgt. Mehew Zobell, of Raymond. Alberta, brought this Spitfire back safely home after the Dieppe air battle despite the fact that his forehead had been injured by an exploding cannon shell from an enemy fighter. The holes which the shell made in the cowling of his cockpit are clearly visible. The severe damage to his rudder can be seen. Despite this, he made a perfect landing. Don Morrison - No. 401 Squadron

The Squadron was brought to readiness at first light (05.07) but did nothing until we took off at 09.30 to escort 24 Fortresses which were to bomb Abbeville aerodrome. We made rendezvous with the Fortresses and the other escort squadrons and went straight to Abbeville. The flak was fairly heavy, but caused no trouble. I saw the bombs burst squarely on all the buildings surrounding the aerodrome.

The bombers then turned left and headed for home. We encountered no opposition from enemy aircraft. Blue section became separated from the rest of the squadron. Red and Yellow sections then proceeded to Dieppe, losing height to approximately 10,000 feet. I did not have time to pay much attention to what was going on below, but at a glance could see that there was terrific activity on land, on water and in the air.

Being chiefly concerned with the aerial side of the battle I saw several FW. 190s flying singly, but stayed with my section until I saw a single FW. 190 just ahead and about 1,500 feet below me. I did a slipping barrel roll, losing height and levelled out about 150 yards behind and slightly to the starboard and above the enemy aircraft. I opened fire with a 2-second burst closing to 25 yards. I saw strikes all along the starboard side of the fuselage and several pieces which seemed about a foot square flew off from around the cowling.

Just as both the enemy aircraft and myself ran into cloud, he exploded with a terrific flash of flame and black smoke. Immediately after this, my windshield and hood were covered with oil and there was a terrific clatter as pieces of debris struck my aircraft.

I broke away, hardly being able to see through my hood or windshield. My number 2 (Yellow 4—Flight Sergeant Reesor) said he saw a piece about 10 feet long break off the enemy aircraft. We then rejoined Yellow 1 and 2 and headed for home.

I was quite unaware that my own aircraft had been damaged and we were flying at about 1,000 feet. Suddenly my engine started to cough and the aircraft shuddered violently. I realized that I was going to have to bale out so I started to climb, running into a low cloud.

My engine cut out completely but I had managed to reach 2,000 feet. I took off my helmet, and undid my straps and opened the hood. I crouched on the seat and then shoved the stick forward. My parachute became caught somehow and I figured I was about 200-250 feet above the water when I got clear. The aircraft plunged into the water below me as my parachute opened.

Almost immediately I pressed the quick release, just as I hit the water. I inflated my dinghy without any trouble and then climbed in. Two of the aircraft that were with me kept circling while the third (Yellow 1 F/L Whitham) went for a rescue boat which was not far away. I put up my flag, which aided the rescue boat to come straight to me.

The aircraft of my own squadron being short of petrol left me but another squadron circled me until I was picked up by the rescue boat. I had only been in the water for about 15 minutes. The captain of the boat estimated my position as 17 miles off Dieppe. I was picked up about 1110 hours and immediately got into dry clothes. Unfortunately, I was told that I would have to stay on the boat until it returned to port at night, so that I would miss the rest of the day’s fun.

During the afternoon we went on several other crash calls without success, often operating within sight of the French coast. We saw the attack by bombers on the convoy beaten off by heavy ack-ack fire. We saw the explosion and pall of smoke caused by two Spitfires colliding head on.

We saw gunfire from the shore and from the boats and aircraft laying smoke screens. Later on in the afternoon two FW.190s passed over us about 5,000 feet. Shortly afterwards, I saw them attack and set on fire another A.S.R. boat. Knowing that we could not do much with our light armament, we raced back towards England to get the help of a Navy boat which we had previously noticed.

As we went back towards the burning launch, we saw another rescue boat trying to give aid to the first one. Suddenly four more FW. 190s appeared and attacked, setting the second launch on fire. Two Spitfires appeared in answer to our calls for help and as one of the pilots circled as close as he could, we indicated the trouble ahead, and they set out.

No sooner had they left us than six more FW. 190s dived down to attack us. We escaped serious damage but our radio was put out of action. The trifling fire put up by our own inadequate Lewis guns had not appeared to bother the enemy aircraft in the least, but the fire from the 20 mm. Oerlikon gun on the Navy boat evidently struck them.

About this time, I believe they ran out of ammunition, and they left us. We picked up the survivors of the two burning launches, all of whom were in the water. The two rescue boats were burning furiously and the ammunition aboard was exploding. As we were picking up the survivors, two Spitfires arrived and circled us. We picked up 14 survivors and the Navy boat picked up about four, believe. There should have been 22. The enemy aircraft had also attacked the men as they were in the water.

Most of the men picked up were very badly wounded, so we returned to port at full throttle. One of the Spitfires escorted us to within about six miles off Beachy Head, the other staying with the slower Navy boat. On the way home we also saw the convoy attacked and I saw a stick of bombs hit the water, but not within half a mile of any ship. We raced to port where there was an ambulance waiting for us. We unloaded the wounded men and then went ashore ourselves.

Squadron Leader Bretz has displayed great courage and initiative which have contributed largely to the successes achieved by his squadron."

During an April 1943 interview, Bretz described his service during the Dieppe raid as, the "busiest day of his life.

"We knew we had them at Dieppe. The Nazis best fighters are pretty good, but they're no match for the new Spitfire.

"In my opinion the German Air Force is as strong as it ever was. Dieppe may have disorganized the Luftwaffe for a short time, but it's pretty strong right now.

"While we have air superiority, the losses would inevitably be heavy in any invasion attempt.

"A fighter pilot is not the scatterbrain some people seem to think. He must be level-headed and know enough to do the right thing at the right time - or else he doesn't come back."

Dieppe Raid 70th Anniversary

August 18, 2012 Globe and Mail - Roman Wozniak was a Spitfire pilot, charged with covering the troops below. There were four Canadian Spitfire squadrons that day, with each squadron spending an hour over the boats before rotating out.

“We protected them and we did a very good job, but the boats sent up smoke to 3,000 feet – the sweet spot for flying. The smoke made them vulnerable to attack, so they dropped to 2,000 feet.

“We broke up into twos. That worked very well because if the Germans popped through the smoke and jumped one group of two, another two would jump them. So as a squadron we had a successful day. We got six German fighters and only lost three.

“One of those that we lost was my roommate. We’d been together for about a year flying in combat. We were almost like brothers.”

The friend was Ed Gardiner, son of Jimmy Gardiner, the minister of agriculture in William Lyon Mackenzie King’s government.

Mr. Wozniak visited his friend’s grave 15 years after Dieppe, and will be there again this weekend.

“I’m not only happy but I’m honoured I was selected to return.

But Wozniak had felt that the deadly battle was largely forgotten.

“It was a disaster,” he said. “It was sort of swept under the rug and very little was said about it.”

The bullet from the Nazi fighter tore through the canopy of George Aitken's Spitfire, missing him by inches.

"My engine and wing were riddled with fire," he says. "Pieces of my aircraft broke off and I began to lose height."

Aitken was flying over Nazi-occupied France with his Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) squadron on June 2, 1942, when it was attacked by a much superior number of German fighters.

"I had gone to the aid of a pal who was being attacked when I suddenly found myself being fired on by two enemy fighters," says Aitken.

"My friend went down and the Nazis backed off their attack on me, probably because they were low on fuel.

"I could see the white cliffs of Dover and safety ahead. But I fell to about 1,000 feet in altitude from 6,000 feet and I realized I wasn't going to make it."

The attack on Aitken's squadron set a record for losses by a single RCAF offensive patrol. One pilot was killed and five became prisoners of war after ditching their damaged Spitfires.

"I dived out and my parachute opened immediately," says Aitken. "I landed feet-first in the Channel, climbed into my dinghy and a motor torpedo boat picked me about 20 minutes later."

Edmonton-born Aitken tried to get a job in a bank on graduating from school. But he was told he would be wanted by the Forces. He applied to become a pilot and joined the RCAF in December 1940.

He trained in Canada and southern England before joining the 416 Spitfire squadron at a new airfield at Peterhead in northeast Scotland in August 1941.

"The threat of a Nazi invasion was still very much on the minds of authorities," says Aitken, 19 at the time.

"Airmen were trained in the intricacies of bayonet fighting while officers practised with Tommy guns."

Despite constant patrolling, few contacts with the enemy were reported.

Just as well, perhaps.

"Our Spitfires had been flown during the Battle of Britain by the likes of Polish, French, South African and Australian pilots," says Aitken.

"The planes were a bit greasy. The Spitfire was one of the fastest and most effective single-seat fighters of its day."

On Aug. 19, 1942, Aitken, flying out of southern England, did two missions over the ill-fated raid on Dieppe.

The Dieppe attack was planned as "a reconnaissance in force" to test the defences of Hitler's continental fortress and the capability of the Allies to launch large-scale amphibious assaults.

"The raid was a disaster," says Aitken. "It lasted only nine hours, but among nearly 5,000 Canadian soldiers involved, more than 900 were killed and 1,874 taken prisoner."

The Allies lost 106 aircraft and 81 airmen, the RCAF losing 13 machines and 10 men.

"Two of our 403 squadron pilots collided on the way out and are buried at Dieppe," says Aitken. "Another of our pilots was also lost that day.

"We flew back over ships lost there and the equipment caught on the rocky shorelines. The Nazis had picked it off easily."

Aitken says philosophically that war should be forgotten. But pilots he flew with gave their lives to overthrow a tyranny that could have swept the world.

"We should not forget them," he says.

Flt. Lt. R.W. McNair, D.F.C., of North Battleford, Sask., who recently distinguished himself over Malta, scored a probably FW.190. He took part in the early-morning "umbrella" sweep.

"We went over with other squadrons of Spits, we met just as many Jerries as over the channel, so we waded right in. From occasional looks at the ground we could see a helluva lot of smoke and plenty of flak coming up."

The squadron's second sweep provided the first action of the day for Sgt. Gordon Page Bray, of Toronto, who later served with a convoy escort to troop-carrying vessels returning over the channel.

"They must have gone home for tea," said Bray, commenting on the absence of Nazi airmen during the final phase of the operation.

"It was most surprising not to see any Jerries about when those ships were stretched for miles across the Channel. I could see much of what happened around Dieppe on our last trip, there was so much smoke."

Citation: "This officer has participated in numerous sorties over enemy territory and has destroyed at least 3 enemy aircraft. During the combined operations at Dieppe, he completed 3 sorties, 2 of which were low-level escort duties. Flight Lieutenant Green has invariably displayed high skill and great determination."

Asked why he got the DFC, Green replied: "Damned if I know. Because I'd lived so long, I guess."

Green also recalled his flying time over Dieppe: "Dieppe was bloody hell for the guys on the ground. I was up over eight times escorting bombers. Other planes were upstairs knocking Jerry down and Jerry was tumbling past us all the time. I wasn't more than 500 feet up all day. I was only fired two bursts all day. It was back and forth, back and forth."

In December 1942, Air Vice-Marshal J. A. Sully of Winnipeg visited the squadron, he showed deep interest in all phases of activity flying, ground entertainment and athletic diversion. To one group of pilots he was stressing the value of athletics in keeping airmen in shape during bad weather periods, when there was little flying and more than enough leisure time. Suddenly he turned to Aldcorn and said:

"How long is it since you have been swimming?"

Aldcorn thought deeply calculating.

"About three months, sir", he said.

"Where?" Air-Vice-Marshal Sully asked.

Aldcorn paused. The men around him were laughing.

"It was In the English Channel, sir", he said. "Just a short distance off Dieppe."

Then the vice-marshal laughed with the men.

Cliff Horncastle and Charlie Stover do thing in pairs in their Canadian Army Co-operation squadron, but they were of different minds today as they told of the part they played in the battle of Dieppe. Cliff, a tall, smiling flying officer from Edmonton, thought luck had been against him.

Charlie, a husky Sarnia, Ont. P/O, knew Lady Luck had given him nothing but smiles. With the rest of their flying mates, members of a squadron commanded by S/L Roy Begg, of Vancouver, they sat around the mess after their combination breakfast-lunch and discussed the first real action of Canadian army troops against the Germans in this war.

And they were all in good spirits, for F/L Freddy Clarke, of Calgary, the only Canadian troop pilot who didn't come home on schedule, had just wobbled in from a hospital with little more than a sore head and a black eye to show for a crash landing in the sea. Word went round to keep away from Horncastle, who was described as temporarily a bad man to know — "definitely a dangerous character."

A scrap with a F.W. 190 that was first a cinch, then a flop, was to blame.Horncastle didn't look dangerous as he sat at the table, dangled his leg over the side and grinned at a group of officers standing around him, all of whom apparently had been giving him quite a ride.

"I guess I was pretty sore for a while. But I'm feeling better now. After all, Holly (Hills) got a Jerry. But boy, it would have been nice to make it two."

Horncastle and Stover were flying together on one of the dawn-to-dusk flights members of this squadron made. They went out about 8 a.m. and were 25 miles inside France when, said Cliff, a FW-190 "jumped on us."

"He turned on me when he saw me coming, but somehow or other I got on his tail. I chased him for about five minutes and if it hadn't been for the guns it would have been a set up. Couldn’t Fire But as luck would have it, only one of the guns of Horncastle's Mustang would fire. Boy, oh boy, I sure am a disappointed guy."

Not Stover, however. About the time Horncastle was chasing his FW-190, four more of these newest Nazi fighters "jumped" at his partner from above. Horncastle saw them coming and shouted "quick, get out of it," over the intercommunications phone to Charlie. Stover got out of it, diving to "naught" feet in the most evasive action of his life. He eluded the FW-190 all right, but did not notice a cement telephone pole coming up at him from the ground.

"There was a crash. The next thing I knew I'd left four feet of wing behind me. I sure wasted no time getting out of that place."

These two experiences taken at random from scores of stories of pilots told on their return are typical of the job the army co-ops did in the course of their reconnaissance patrols.

Citation: "This officer has led his squadron with great skill. During the combined operations at Dieppe on August 19th, 1942, the squadron destroyed 3 enemy aircraft, probably destroyed 1 and damaged 7 others without loss to themselves. This achievement reflects the greatest credit on this officer's excellent leadership and he has inspired confidence in those under his command. He has personally destroyed 1 enemy "E" boat, and has probably destroyed a Junkers 88 and damaged other enemy ships and aircraft."

Flight Lieutenant Jack Beach interviewed Chadburn and Dal Russel shortly after the raid.

Chadburn reported in a broadcast interview that his squadron shot down three enemy machines, probably destroyed another and damaged at least six.

All the pilots in Chadburn's squadron returned safely, he said. Specifically, Chadburn said, the squadron shot down three 190’s, probably destroyed a Junkers 88, damaged five Junkers 88's and damaged one Messerschmitt 110.

F/L Russel explained how he shot down one aircraft when the enemy pilot "wasn't looking."

"It was pretty shaky all around. I was very lucky. I got him when he wasn't looking and I think he was probably a fairly green pilot."

Asked how Dieppe looked from the air, Russel said:

"There was fire all over. The town was really shaken. There's nothing left of it at all, I believe."

He said the Canadian pilots "did an excellent job all the way through."

He said he might have bagged another plane, but "ran out of ammunition and I don't know what happened to that one."

Air and land co-operation was perfectly timed, Russel said, and "everything worked out well."

He believed the presence of Canadian land troops gave the pilots added confidence.

Chadburn said it was "the biggest show this squadron has ever been on. We had quite a good time, I'd say, all the way through."

In February 1943, Lloyd Chadburn returned to his home in Aurora, Ontario on a 30 day leave. He recalled the Dieppe raid during an interview.

"The chaps on the ground were definitely brave. I'd hate to be down there, personally. The whole raid went off according to schedule, and when we left Dieppe was all ablaze."

Citation: "This airman was the wireless operator air gunner of an aircraft detailed to attack a selected target for a landing by our combined forces at Dieppe. The bombing task was successfully accomplished but on the return flight, whilst some three miles out to sea from Dieppe, the aircraft was attacked by a Focke Wulfe 190. A burst of enemy fire raked the fuselage and set the starboard engine on fire. Sergeant Scott's gunseat was shot from under him but he fired a short burst at the attacker although he was unable to observe the effect. The pilot's cockpit became filled with smoke and fumes, and the pilot himself was unable to see as he could not jettison the cockpit hood. The aircraft was forced down, and on impact with the water it broke into two by the rear gunner's compartment. Sergeant Scott was thrown into the water without his dinghy. The front portion of the bomber turned over and sank. The pilot and observer were still inside but eventually both came to the surface in an unconscious condition. Sergeant Scott immediately swam to the assistance of the pilot, inflated his safety jacket, removed his dinghy inflated, and got the unconscious pilot safely aboard. Some 15 yards away the observer was struggling with the shroud of his parachute which was around his neckband dragging his head under the water. Sergeant Scott swam to his aid, freed him, but was unable to inflate his dinghy as the fabric was torn. He therefore swam with the observer to the pilot's dinghy and managed to get him aboard. The dinghy was not large enough to hold three occupants but with complete disregard for his own safety Sergeant Scott commenced swimming towards Dieppe. Fortunately, soon afterwards, a friendly aircraft flew overhead. Anticipating that help would be forthcoming. he swam around and about fifty minutes later both he and his comrades were rescued by a launch of the rescue service. In the face of extreme danger this gallant airman displayed conspicuous courage and determination in his resolve to save his comrades, both of whom were injured and in great distress. Sergeant Scott sustained a sprained ankle and a deep cut over the right eye."

R.A.F. veterans who have gone out on countless raids with their own bombers in the past two years exultantly recounted at their mess the remarkable performance of United States Fortresses at Abbeville and Rouen.

R.A.F. Squadron Leader Douglas H. Watkins, D.S.C., a youthful survivor of the Battle of Britain whose Spitfires escorted the Fortresses on both daylight, raids over France, did not seem able to get over the extraordinary accuracy with which the Fortresses' crews destroyed their objectives.

Young Watkins, who was a surveyor before the war, sat in a remote corner of a comfortable hut where British and American fighter pilots were quietly chatting and playing checkers, and recounted in detail the story of Fortresses' two sallies to France.

"My lads," he said, "kept a rendezvous with a dozen of your Fortresses early on Monday evening. We had two of our Spitfires to each Fortress. The American bombers flew at over 20,000 and we were terraced above. It was clear over
the Channel and within forty-five minutes we were deep inland over our target-Rouen.

"The Fortresses moved along in perfect formation at an astonishing clip. When they began to drop their stuff the results fairly made our eyes pop. Bombs were dropped on the full length of the Rouen railroad and marshalling yards, and completely wrecked them. The Fortresses laid the next load smack on industrial targets, and they smashed their objectives one by one without getting out of perfect formation.

A few moments after the Fortresses had dropped the last of their bombs a flight of Focke-Wulfs showed up under their left wing. The R.A.F. Spitfires dived to meet them and two of them fell. Watkins' lads got one and Fortress guns disposed of the other. The remainder, as Watkins put it, "Pushed off."

The American hombers moved to Britain in formation still unbroken, tile Spitfires hovering over and beside them to keep off any possible fresh Nazi attack.

Watkins' squadrons were out early as part of the aerial umbrella over Dieppe.

"An incredible sight that was, incidentally," the flier said. "Our sorties went over at 6 a.m, to cover the landing. From a high altitude we saw tiny British craft wheeling round and round cutting a wake of spume. It looked like someone dragging his fingers through the water, and the water looked like jelly. Jerry was firing his guns from the Dieppe cliffs - it was his six-gun batteries we know so well - trying to get our seacraft. We would have loved to go down for a try at him but that was not our job. We had to keep cover then go back and pick up your Fortresses again."

Watkins' R.A.F. crews refuelled and took to the air again and kept the rendezvous with the two squadrons of Fortresses at 9:30 a.m. Again their meeting was at an aerial crossroads four miles high and again the Spitfires terraced above the giant bombers.

There were twenty-four Fortresses and forty-eight Spits, and
there was "hell to pay" at Dieppe. The fighter and bomber crews saw British seacraft still surging along the beaches, saw great. smoke clouds rising ashore, saw tracer bullets like red wool basting cutting through the black billows, saw red flashes of German cannon and anti-aircraft and saw the sky swarming with other British fighters.

"Really an excellent show," the squadron leader said. "But we had this bombing job and we got on with it. The Fortresses kept perfect formation under the six planes in each formation -simply wonderful formations that never seemed to drop off an air's-breadth.

"It, was clear below as we made as if to attack Dieppe. We headed straight for it, but sheered off to the left and drummed on for Abbeville. We gave your Iads plenty of roof because their armament is good and they seem well able to take care of themselves. Abbeville lay under us a clear target."

The objective was Abbeville's Nazi fighter base, from which German fighters to the last two years had attacked Britain and intercepted British sailies over France. When the Fortresses dropped their first bombs, smashing the base's runways, the Nazi ground defenses suddenly blazed away. Their fire dented the armor of some Fortresses, but still the formations droned on in perfect alignment. Squadron Leader Watkins and his men scanned the skies for possible enemy squadrons, but saw none.

"The Fortresses moved right along, dropping more of their stuff," the British officer said.

"The effect of their bombs was quite the most accurate any of us has seen so far - really astonishing. We know that base. We even know all the motor cars the Jerries use around it. There is one fellow who dashes around in a whopping big car, for example, and we have often thought that we would like to dust him off a bit. Anyway, your lads again got everything they aimed at. I would say that they are absolutely ideal for daylight bombing. They splashed the northwest end of that base, popped another set of Jerry's buildings and dropped more on his dispersal huts. They have these huts under trees and keep their ships in them. Your lads hit them beautifully and quite smeared them."

John Conway Bicknell - 226 Squadron

Congratulations on your excellent web page on the Raid on Dieppe…but I was disappointed not to see a reference to my Mother's first husband, JC Bicknell DFC, ( killed in 1944 ), who flew with the decorated Donald T Smith. John Bicknell was born in 1921 in London; educated at King Edwards School, Witney, Surrey; home as of 1943 was given as Bristol. Commissioned from the ranks in 1942. P/O John Conway Bicknell, No.226 Squadron, awarded DFC 20 April 1943 by King George V1 at Buckingham Palace. There is no citation in London Gazette but the following from Air Ministry Bulletin: "Pilot Officer Bicknell is a cool, calculating navigator. He has taken part in a large number of sorties, including five sea searches, and has participated in several other operations. His work has been worthy of high praise”.

Former soldier rejects Dieppe as pilot project - Toronto Globe and Mail August 23, 1982

Re the 40th anniversary of the Dieppe operation in which the Canadian Second Division paid such a terrible price: I was a member of the First Division (artillery) at that time. We were stationed in Sussex and I can still recall my horror at seeing truckload after truckload of severely wounded Canadian troops moving north from the Channel to hospitals in the area.I am one of those who will never accept that the Dieppe operation can be justified on military grounds as a pilot project for the later assault on Normandy of D-Day, 1944. It seems utter folly to have made a frontal attack in early daylight on a heavily defended beach where the enemy's guns were placed in a position to slaughter the invading force. Later I spoke to a German prisoner of war from Dieppe (a machine-gunner), who said they had been at action stations for about 48 hours before the raid.In brief, the planning appears to have been gravely incompetent. You do not need to sacrifice the lives of 1,000 young men, and cause the imprisonment of another 2,000, to prove that two plus two equals four. John Lawrence Wemyss Ellacombe - No. 253 Squadron

The son of an English doctor who had served during the Boer War, John Ellacombe was born at Livingstone, Northern Rhodesia, on February 28 1920 and educated at Diocesan College (Bishops) in Cape Town. In May 1939 he went to Britain to join the RAF, trained as a pilot. Posted to No 253 Squadron as a flight commander, he found night fighting dull, and volunteered for daylight operations. He flew in support of the ill-fated raid on Dieppe, and as he attacked a gun battery his aircraft was hit by flak. Ellacombe managed to get over the sea before bailing out and being picked up by a Canadian landing craft. (The Telegraph)

'Jimmy' Talalla - 118 Squadron

Flight Lieutenant C L F "Jimmy" Talalla of No. 122 Squadron RAF, standing in front of his North American Mustang Mark III at B12/ Ellon, Normandy. Born of Singhalese parents in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya, Talalla joined the RAF in 1941 and served as a sergeant pilot with No. 118 Squadron RAF, flying Supermarine Spitfires, before being commissioned in 1942. He joined 122 Squadron as a flight commander in 1944 and finished the war having shot down 5 enemy aircraft. His brother, Warrant Officer H C B Talalla, a Hawker Typhoon pilot serving with No. 182 Squadron RAF, was killed in action, over the Falaise area on 25 July 1944.
